Severe weather tests Startrek Nav Trial competitors

The second round of the 2009-2010 National Night Navigation Championship, Cork Motor Club's Startrek navigation trial, saw 37 crews on the start line on Saturday night Sunday morning (October 31/November 1 2009). The event was again based in the GAA hall in Buttevant with first car away at 11pm. The route covered areas of Ballyhoura, Doneraile, Ballyhea, Churchtown, Liscarroll, Freemount, Meelin, Kanturk, Kilbrin in North Cork, and returned to Buttevant at 4.30am Sunday, covering a route of 115 miles.
On a night of very wet weather, which saw the organisers having to scrap two sections due to the severe conditions, 27 crews made it to the final control. Of these, two were clear of penalties at the finish with the Monaghan crew of Shane Maguire and Kieran Coyle (Subaru 1.8) getting the win on a tie break over Arthurs Kierans/Ashley McAdoo, in a Subaru 2.0.
Ger Gowen and Paul Phelan took third place with four penalties, in another tie break, ahead of Garreth Beagan and Stephen Thornton, both in Subarus. Ger and Paul got most of their penalties in the final quarter of the event. Fifth place went to Donal Healy and Peter Keohane who also fell foul of the final section which included some Plot and Bash.
Best of the semi-experts were in sixth place where Colin Fitzgerald and Daire Hayes, again in a Subaru Impreza,  were also involved in a tie break to decide the place. Local crew Tadhg O’Shea and Brendan Fahy took seventh in their Opel Astra having incurred thier first penalty in the first quarter of the event. Eight place went to the expert crew of Alan Shinnors and George Shinnors, also driving a Subaru Impreza
Possibly the best result of the night were beginners Chris Kelly and Sam Johnston who finished an excellent ninth in an Opel Vectra on their first trip to Cork to finish on 13 penalties. Here again a tie break with semi experts Johnny Kenneally and Ken Carmody also on 13 penalties finishing tenth overall in their Vauxhall Vectra. Finihsing 11th were Monaghan Semi-Expert crew Michael Carbin and Evin Hughes, in a Subaru Legacy
The top Novice crew were Kevin Keenan and Barry Garvey from Monaghan in a Subaru Impreza. They finished 12th overall one place and one penalty ahead of fellow Novices Dermot Whelton and Barry O'Sullivan from West Cork driving a Mazda 323.
Former National champions Andy Mackarel and Liam Higgins had a night to forget with their Impreza suffering badly from wet electrics all night, leaving them to finish in fourteenth place.
Paul Casey and Stephen Quinn were on their first outing in a Subaru Impreza and despite some problems on the night, managed to bring it home in fifteenth place and  third in the novice class. Brother Johnny Casey and Vincent Goggin in a 2.0 Peugeot 406,  finished one place behind in 16th after carrying out some running repairs at the petrol halt.
Two Monaghan Expert crews Richard Cassidy and Sean McCaffrey, Vauxhall Vectra and  Michael Tynan and Ciaran Tynan, Subaru Impreza were off their usual pace finishing 17th and 18th respectively while West Cork Beginners Brian O'Mahony and Ian Stately finished 19th.
Last years top expert Ger O Connell and Niall O Keeffe in a 2.0 Celica were another of the crews to fall foul of the weather. They held a strong position up to the final section where they suffered mechanical problems after traversing one of  the many floods and nurshed the car home to  20th place.  Novice crew James Kingston and John Buttimer were 21st, just six penalties back while Fergus and Anthony Harrington from West Cork brought their Honda Accord to 22nd place another five penalties down.
Lisgriffin's Derek Butler and Skibbereen's Olivia McCarthy, driving a1.6 Nissan Sunny; managed to pick up some hard earned points in the Novice class to finish 23rd.
Timmy Foley and Conor Collins took the third Beginners place in their Toyota Corolla when they finished 24th overall and were followed home by fellow Beginners Andrew Beamish and Fergus Murphy, Nissan Sunny, 25th and  John Helen and David Beamish 26th ina Mazda 323F, both crews from West Cork.
Despite a troubled night Joe Shinnors and Trish Hogan brought thier Toyota Rav 4 home in 27th place.
One crews who didn't make it to the final control were Paul McMahon and Kieran Brennan from Churchtown, in a Volvo440 who retired with mechanical problems early in the night. Also the Cork/Wesrtmeath pairing of Trevor O'Callaghan and Eoin Longworth succumbed to fuel pump failure in their Rover 600 while beginners Stephen Lane and Gillian White had to call it a day after the fanbelt on their Honda Civic broke. But it hasn't put them off. "Can't wait for the next event," they said.
Other non finishers included Experts Ray O'Neil Stephen O'Neill;  Semi-Expert James Fitzgerald Ed O'Neill; Novices Cathal McCarthy, Mark McCarthy, William Lynch, Colm McSweeney, Mervyn Helen, David Warner, Eoin Fitzgerald, Cal McCarthy, Eamon Dullea,   and Beginners Paul McMahon and Kieran Brennan.
Clerk of the course Martin Sheehan and Asst COC Sean Daly, would like to thank Lynn Sheehan, Edel Fahy, Eileen Daly, Ciara Daly, Walter Dick, Kieran Daly, Jerry Hynes, Niall Murphy and Ian O Brien for all the hard work before and during the event. A big thank you also to all the marshals  who turned up on the night without whom these events would not run, plus the local gardai and last but not least the residence along the route for their support.

Entry list for Startrek Navigation Trial 2009

Navigation Trials in Cork continue to command a healthy interest for competitors with this weekend’s Startrek Navigation Trial showing a healthy entry. By Wedneaday 35 crews had entered which still allowed a little extra time for some late comers. Last year’s event winners Arthur Kierans and Ashley McAdoo are back to defend their title as are a lot of last year’s class winners.  But it is the amount of beginners and novices that augers well for this type of motorsport. Six Beginners, two of these crews as a direct result of the Cork Motor Club’s Rally Lectures, have entered and the same amount of  Novices. Entry list included below
The 115mile event starts from Buttevant GAA Community Centre Hall, with check-in and scrutiny from 7pm on Saturday and is part of the National, Munster Navigation and Cork Motor Club championships. Marshals are need so please let Martin or Sean know if you are helping. COC  Martin Sheehan 086 8432472 and  Asst COC Sean Daly 086 3731193.

Kierans and McAdoo win Startrek

Winners on Cork Motor Club’s 2008 Startrek Navigation Trial on the first weekend in November were Arthur Kierans and Ashley McAdoo driving a Subaru Impreza when they finished on 10 penalties. They were pushed hard by the Celica of Ger O’Connell and Niall O’Keeffe (1st Experts)  who finished with one extra penalty at the end of an 85 mile route which incorporated some 36 Time Points, Vias and ITCs.

Third place  ended in a tie with two crews finishing on 14 penalties.  The decider went to Michael Carbin and Evine Hughes, Subaru Impreza who also took the first Novice award.  Brendan Fahy and Tadhg O’Shea had to settle for fourth but they also took top Semi Expert award. Fifth place and second Semi Expert were Colin Fitzgerald and Daire Hayes in a Corsa on 17 penalties. Top seeds and favourite for victory before the event Bones O’Connor and Paul Phelan had to settle for sixth and second experts after a disastrous WA at TP6 scuppered their chance of victory. Best of the Beginners were Donal McArdle and Raymond Conlon who finished in an excellent seventh place on just 21 penalties.

Time Points 9 and 19 were the ones that caused all the problems for competitors on the event, with all crews suffering time losses at these points. In all 36 crews competed on the event with 32 of these being classed as finishers. Congrats to Martin Sheehan and his crew for an excellent event.
